In order to provide a neutral forum for open discussion of relevant issues among all stakeholders, and to establish and communicate best practices, a group of industry leaders has recently formed a new and independent, non-profit professional society, the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP - pronounced "IzMap"). The new society welcomed more than 160 delegates to its first annual conference in Princeton in April, and is now in the process of developing a series of ongoing educational and other initiatives. ISMPP's membership includes representatives from the biopharmaceutical industry, publication planning agencies, medical publishers, and journal editors. "Professional publication planners in the biopharmaceutical industry are tasked to ensure full and timely disclosure of novel research findings while also maintaining alignment to the commercial goals of the development program," stated Tim Bacon, President of PeerView, Inc. and the inaugural President of ISMPP. "As an independent professional membership society, ISMPP can serve a unique role in building bridges between stakeholders in this important process so that all parties can contribute to the development of best practices." ISMPP was formed by a founding steering committee of industry leaders. The committee had broad representation from the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, journal publishers, and publication planning service provider organizations. Veteran association executive Kimberly Goldin was named ISMPP's Executive Director. About the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals: The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) was formed in April 2005 to serve the educational needs of professionals involved in publication planning and related activities in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. The independent, non-profit ISMPP's mission is to support publication professionals through education in fields associated with publication development and planning. The Society strives to promote excellence in publishing effectiveness via open exchange and debate of relevant issues, as well as dissemination of practical information through high-quality conferences and training programs. Additional information about ISMPP is available at http://www.ISMPP.org. Contact ISMPP Kimberly Goldin, 914-945-0507 kgoldin@ismpp.org
