Physicians Making 'E' a Way of Life

New Analysis Finds Physicians Shifting from Offline to Online World

NEW YORK, July 19, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- Can't read your doctor's handwriting? If technology adoption trends continue to evolve at the same pace, some day soon you may not have to.

Healthcare marketing firm Manhattan Research announced today the release of its latest physician research module The Shift to "E". The recent analysis exploring physicians' transition from the analog to the digital revealed a dramatic increase in the number of physicians utilizing online resources for administrative, educational, and promotional activities. Two activities of specific interest include prescribing electronically and the ongoing integration of electronic detailing for pharmaceutical marketing information.

The analysis of trends in electronic prescribing (eRx) through personal digital assistants (PDAs) showed that use of an eRx system through a PDA has grown 300% since 2004.

"Physicians using the handheld platform write an average of 42 more prescriptions per week than physicians using eRx through the desktop or another platform," stated Manhattan Research Senior Analyst, Erika Fishman. "This represents a significant difference in prescription-writing habits and further demonstrates the enhanced efficiency that PDAs can bring to the physician workday."

In addition to the eRx analysis, Manhattan Research found that physicians plan to make more time in their schedules for electronic detailing. Electronic detailing, or e-detailing, occurs when pharmaceutical companies inform a physician about products via email or online instead of by personal visits with a pharmaceutical detail representative.

"Embattled pharma sales forces can rest easy," said Manhattan Research Vice President Meredith Abreu. "The majority of physicians don't plan to spend less time with their detail rep because they see e-detailing as an educational opportunity, not as a sales rep replacement."

The Shift to "E" revealed further insight into physician profiling, search engine usage, Internet attitudes, popular research websites, technology adoption, online journals, online medical references, medical education, conferences, the use of electronic medical records (EMRs), and spending trends for physician practices.

Complete findings and analysis from The Shift to "E" are immediately available to Manhattan Research clients. For additional information on how to gain access to The Shift to "E" please call (212) 255-7775 or visit www.manhattanresearch.com/shift.htm

Methodology
The Shift to "E" research module was derived from Taking the Pulse(R) v5.0, an annual multi-client research service of Manhattan Research. Taking the Pulse(R) is the longest, continuously trended research of its kind and is conducted via a random digit dial telephone survey among a nationally representative sample of 1,208 physicians practicing within the United States.
