I've heard everywhere (press, friends, relatives, politicians, martians!) about the current and/or impending nursing shortage?
  • Is there really one?

  • Where has it hit the hardest, and where is it expected to hit the hardest?
  • Why is there a shortage?
Please help me understand whether this is really true and what's going on!

I also constantly hear about the nursing shortage. I recently read an article regarding new nurse programs beginning in some hospitals around Massachusetts to train more people to become nurses. I think one factor that accounts for the shortage is a lack of nurses interested or qualified to become instructors to train people to become licensed or registered nurses. These new programs offer incentives such as tuition reimbursment to people willing to instruct or take part in these programs.
